Understanding Anti-Slip Treatment

Slip No More’s Anti-Slip Treatment works by creating microscopic pores within the surface layer of certain mineral-based floors such as ceramic and porcelain tiles as well as concrete. These micro-pores increase the friction between the floor and your foot when the surface becomes wet, dramatically reducing slip risk.

This is not a coating and does not sit on top of the tile. Instead, it modifies the floor structure in a way that is invisible to the eye and long-lasting in performance. Because the change happens within the tile itself, it doesn’t peel, flake, or wear off like surface coatings. This makes it a reliable solution for both high-traffic commercial environments and everyday residential spaces where safety needs to be permanent and maintenance-free.

You can think of a treated tile like a Formula 1 car switching to wet-weather tires when it rains. The micro-pores act the same way the grooves do, helping water disperse more effectively and reducing the chance of slipping just like those tires reduce aquaplaning.

Where Treatment Works, and Where it Doesn`t

Not all floors can be treated, and understanding the difference is key to delivering professional results. Anti-slip treatment works best on smooth, mineral-based tiles that become dangerously slick when water is present. These include surfaces like ceramic and porcelain floors in bathrooms, kitchens, entrances, pool surrounds, change rooms, lobbies, hotel corridors, commercial walkways, and many public areas where glossy tiles create high-risk conditions. These surfaces are ideal because the treatment can interact directly with the tile body to form micro-pores that immediately improve grip when the floor becomes wet.

On the other hand, some surfaces simply do not respond to treatment. Floors that are sealed, painted, coated, or made from materials like vinyl, laminate, wood, or textured stone cannot form the micro-pores needed for the treatment to work. In these situations, dealers should never attempt a treatment, because the result will be ineffective and may lead to customer complaints or callbacks. These floors require alternative safety solutions such as anti-slip tape, stair treads, or specialised coatings, which you will learn about in Module 3.

The goal is to train your eye to recognise which floors are suitable the moment you see them. If the surface is smooth, tiled, and becomes slippery when wet, treatment is often the best and most professional solution. If the floor has a sealant, texture, synthetic material, or a coating on top, then treatment is not appropriate and another Slip No More product will give a better result. This knowledge helps you avoid mistakes, provide honest advice, and position yourself as a trusted floor safety specialist.

Understanding Sealed vs Unsealed Tiles

Anti-slip treatments are designed to work on unsealed, absorbent surfaces such as ceramic and porcelain tiles. These surfaces allow the treatment to react with the tile and create microscopic traction.

Sealed tiles, on the other hand, have a protective barrier applied to the surface. This can be a factory-applied glaze, a penetrating sealer, or a topical coating such as wax or polish. When a tile is sealed, the treatment cannot properly react with the surface, which means results will be limited or ineffective.

  • If the water beads or sits on the surface, the tile is sealed or coated

Always test a small area before full application. If a surface is sealed, it may require deep cleaning, stripping, or an alternative solution such as a coating or anti-slip tape.
